Gatwick terminals and getting there

Gatwick has two terminals, North and South, connected by a free inter-terminal shuttle that takes about three minutes and runs continuously. That shuttle is why terminal choice matters less at Gatwick than at Manchester — a car park serving the other terminal costs you a few minutes, not a taxi fare. Gatwick Airport railway station sits directly beneath South Terminal, which is why South is the default for anyone combining rail and parking.

easyJet is the largest carrier and operates mainly from North Terminal. British Airways, most long-haul operators and the rail link use South Terminal. Gatwick moves airlines between terminals more often than most UK airports, so check your booking rather than assuming from the airline.

Gatwick sits beside the M23 in West Sussex, between Horley and Crawley, and is reached from Junction 9A — the airport spur. Set your satnav to RH6 0NP for South Terminal and RH6 0PJ for North Terminal; both have their own approach road off the spur and the split comes up quickly, so knowing your terminal before the junction saves a loop. Typical drive times are 45 minutes from central London, 30 from Croydon, an hour from Brighton and around 25 minutes from the M25 at Junction 7.
