EV Charging at UK Airport Car Parks

EV charging at UK airport car parks is real but unreliable. Heathrow has the best provision in the country, chargers cannot be reserved with a parking booking at any airport, and budget long-stay car parks are consistently last in the queue for installation.

The rule that catches EV drivers out

No UK airport lets you reserve a charger alongside a parking booking. You book a parking space; charging is a separate, first-come service billed separately, and there is no guarantee a working charger will be free when you arrive. For a driver who has planned to arrive on low charge and top up while away, that is a genuine problem.

The practical consequence is simple: arrive with enough charge to get home, and treat any charging that happens while you are away as a bonus. Every EV driver who has had a bad experience at an airport car park has had this one.

Which airports actually have chargers

Heathrow has the best provision of any UK airport, with chargers across the Short Stay and Business estates at every terminal and a growing number in Long Stay. Gatwick is next, with chargers in both the Short Stay and Long Stay estates at each terminal.

Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol all concentrate their chargers in the terminal-adjacent car parks rather than the budget long-stay products — so at those airports, choosing to charge means paying the proximity premium as well. Stansted has better provision in Short and Mid Stay than in Long Stay.

The Scottish airports lag noticeably. Edinburgh's off-site operators have none, and Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness are thin. If you are flying from Scotland in an EV, plan your charge around the journey rather than the airport.

Off-site and valet: worse, for structural reasons

Off-site park and ride operators rarely offer charging, because installing chargers on a leased field with an uncertain tenancy is a poor investment. APH, the largest multi-airport operator in this set, has provision at some sites and not others and cannot guarantee availability at any of them.

Meet and greet is worse still. Valet compounds are the least likely place in the airport parking market to find charging, and because your car is being moved and stored by someone else, an EV's charge state on return is outside your control in a way it is not with keys-retained parking. For an EV, park and ride at an airport with a charger is the most predictable option available.
