Why a public code usually beats an eligibility discount

The arithmetic is simple and it runs the same way at every airport. An eligibility discount is typically 5 to 10% and typically restricted to the operator or platform running it, which is rarely the cheapest one at that airport. A public code is 20% and applies to the cheapest product. Twenty per cent of a small number beats ten per cent of a larger one.

Take Manchester as the worked example. The cheapest product there is JetParks at £54 pre-booked, £43 with the public code. A hypothetical 10% NHS offer on the on-airport Multi-Storey at £92 gives £83. The eligibility discount is worth £9; the public code is worth £11 and starts from a base £38 lower. The gap is £40, and it runs the same direction everywhere.

We do carry an NHS-branded code, NHS5, worth up to 12% off the pre-booked rate. It is listed for completeness rather than recommended: it is worth about half the sitewide BCP25 on the same booking, and the two cannot be combined. The useful habit is to put both into the checkout in turn and keep whichever gives the lower total, which on the cheapest product at any airport in the table above is the public code.

What Blue Light Card actually covers

Blue Light Card carries genuine travel offers, and they rotate monthly. Airport parking appears in that category far less often than cardholders expect, and when it does it is normally a national platform offer covering many airports at once rather than an airport-specific deal. Newcastle and Bristol generate the highest proportion of Blue Light searches in this set, probably reflecting the concentration of emergency-service employers in those regions.

The practical method: price your dates with the public code first and note the total. Then check the Blue Light travel section. If a parking offer is running, compare the two totals rather than the two percentages — platform offers often exclude the cheapest car parks, so a higher headline discount can still produce a higher final price.
